What Do You Believe About Money?

August 4, 2008

Image of a bankHow do you feel about money? I mean, deep down, what do you really think about it? Do you think money is the root of all evil? Or do you think that money can buy happiness?

Believe it or not, the way you feel about money can have a huge impact on your finances, and how you deal with debt. Unfortunately, many (probably most) people never really think about how they truly feel about money.

And most of us can trace our deep-seated financial beliefs back to our childhood. If your parents believed that money is evil, or that being poor was somehow more “moral” chances are that rubbed off on you, even if you don’t consciously realize it.

Nine out of ten people who are saddled with a lot of debt (actually, more like 99 out of 100) got there because of poor financial management skills. And these skills often go back to what they learned from their parents and other people they knew as kids.

Now, there are ways to overcome these limiting beliefs, and I’ll be discussing some of them in future articles here on the website.

But for now, there’s really one key thing that you need to remember - money is amoral. In other words, money itself is neither moral nor immoral - it just is. How you use it and what place it takes in your life is where this “morality” comes into play.
