Life Without Credit Cards
Does the thought of life without credit cards make you cringe? If the credit card companies suddenly ceased to exist, how would it affect your life?
Would you be able to go about your days with few or no hassles, or would your life as you know it fall apart?
Credit cards have their uses, and in today’s age of ordering things online and over the phone, they’re practically a necessity.
But far too many people come to rely on them for things as basic as buying groceries for the week.
If you’re afraid you’ve become too attached to your credit cards, try this experiment for a month (or even a week).
Pay cash for everything you buy “in person.”
Next time you go grocery shopping, stop at the ATM and take out the cash you need, or use your debt card instead of a credit card.
Buying gas? Same thing - cash or debit, no credit card.
I suspect you’ll learn two things if you commit to sticking with this experiment.
First, you’ll realize just how many things you actually buy on your credit cards. It’s so easy to pull them out when you want something, and most people don’t really think about how often they’re doing that.
And second, you’ll save some money. Chances are you’ll see something you want to buy at some point when you don’t have the cash with you or you don’t have the money in the bank to debit it.
If you take the experiment seriously and only use cash, you won’t be able to buy those things. And chances are good that a couple of hours later, you’re not going to miss them.
But you’ll certainly like having that much less to pay on your credit card at the end of the month!
